President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut the sod for the commencement of the building of a new 400-bed maternity block and 100-bed urology center at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He said the project is expected to reduce drastically cases of maternal mortality in the country. The President cut the sod on Tuesday August 11. It is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Speaking at the ceremony Mr Akufo-Addo explained that the he made a promise earlier that a new block was going to be constructed because the current one is not fit for purpose. Once completed, he said the block will contribute to addressing maternal mortality. “I was struck by the poor state of the maternal block. I promised to help rescue the situation as the current state of the building is not fit for any purpose “Today’s ceremony is a fulfilment of the pledge I made. “Once completed, the facility will contribute to addressing the persistent challenges of high maternal and child-heath morbidity and mortality in in Ghana,” he said.
